Today I am going to give you step by step instructions of how to install Liberty 1.0 on your Droid X. First you will need to have a rooted Droid X (see yesterday’s post).

Once you have a rooted Driod X. You just need to download a few files:

DroidXBootstrap.apk – DOWNLOAD
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/08/droid-x-recovery.html
I have provided a link to this file. I am not the creator of this application. If you would like to donate money to the author please download this from the Android Marketplace (search for Droid X Recovery Bootstrap).

LibertyX-1.0 – DOWNLOAD
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/01/12/droid-x-rom-liberty-by-kejar-and-jrummy/
I have provided a link to this file. I am not the creator of this ROM. Its 118.8 MB’s I don’t know how long I will be able to host this file. MIRROR

Once you have downloaded these two files you will need to place them on your SD card. They both need to be directly on the card, not in any directory.
ONCE AGAIN I DO NOT CLAIM ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY BRICKED PHONES. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK

Make sure you have both USB debugging and Unknown Sources enabled. [?]

Install DroidXBootstrap.apk (downloaded above).

Open Droid X Bootstrap. Touch “Bootstrap”. When that has completed touch “Reboot Recovery”.

Your Droid will boot to a very basic screen. This application running is “Clockwork Recovery”. From here we will backup your current phone and install the custom Liberty Rom. Use the volume buttons to scroll and the camera button to select. Any other button will go back a step.

Backup:
So Clockwork Recovery is running, scroll down to “Backup and Restore”. Then choose “Backup”. This will take 5 minutes or so.
This will make a clean backup of your Droid. You should be able to restore to this if you are not happy with Liberty for any reason.

Wipe Data / Factory Reset:
Now you need to wipe all the previous configurations to make room for our new custom Rom.
After the backup is complete choose “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” to wipe your phone.

Installing Liberty 1.0 Rom:
Once the all the data has been cleared you are ready to install the Liberty Rom. Still in Clockwork Recovery, choose “Install ZIP from SD Card”. You will be presented with more choices. Pick “Choose ZIP From SD Card”. Find LibertyX-1.0.zip, and select YES.

Once the ROM has been installed just reboot the phone and wait patiently while it boots up for the first time. If you back out properly there is a “Reboot” option inside Clockwork Recovery.

Have you ever been without internet when you desperately needed it? If you tether your phone, you will be able to use it’s broadband connection to connect to the internet. Using Verizon’s service I was able to tether almost the entire way during vacation last year. I traveled from Indianapolis to Denver and had 3g 99% of the trip.

In order for this to work, you will need to be rooted.
see how to root droid x

You will also need to enable the installation of non-Market applications.
at the top of step four here.

Once you have these two things completed just visit http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

Find your phone, the Droid X, and download the appropriate build.
Download page for Droid X.

Once you have completed the download you can install this application by browsing for the .apk file you just downloaded. Probably located under /downloads/.

If you have a Droid X like I do, you will eventually want to root it. The benefits are huge, but rooting is just the first step.

What is rooting?
Root is a Linux term. Its the access you want for full control. It’s the full admin access account. When you root your phone, you are given full access to the phone.

Why root?
You can install custom applications; applications that are generally blocked. Free tethering was why I originally rooted my phone.

Were you previously rooted and you lost it during the 2.2.1 upgrade?
You will need to do a factory restore before continuing below.

Open the Applications Tray. (arrow pointing up located in the middle at the bottom of the display screen)

Touch Settings

Touch Privacy

Touch Factory data reset

Touch Reset Phone

Touch Erase Everything

How do I get started?
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BREAK YOUR PHONE.
First off I have rooted a 2.2.1 and a 2.2 with this method. These releases come out often so be sure to check your Android version (Settings > About Phone > Android Version).

Next you need to download z4root. I am going to provide them on my blog for now. If my bandwidth goes crazy or I get in trouble for hosting them (I am not the creator, just a user) I will take them down and post links to other sites.

Z4Root.1.3.0.apk – Download
Creator: RyanZA

Enable these settings:

1. Allow installation of non-Market applications. Settings > Applications > Check Unknown Sources.
2. Debug mode when USB is connected. Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. [?]

Plug your phone into your computer via USB. Enable USB Mass Storage. [?] Copy z4root.1.3.0.apk (you should have downloaded this above) to the root of your SD card.
Disable USB Mass Storage.

Install z4root:
Settings > Files > Phone > z4root.1.3.0.apk

Before running the newly installed application, restart your Droid X.

When the Droid X is back up and running, launch z4root. Touch Permanent Root. Leave the phone alone, it will reset when it has completed. If you don’t reset your phone in between installing z4root it will likely freeze during the rooting process.

My friend was nice and gave me his old CRT Projection HDTV. Its a 52 inch 1080i TV. It was broken, and sitting in his garage, but I was happy to take it off his hands. They even delivered it for free. Aren’t friends are the best? I was reading on how to fix it. It had a convergence problem. There are chips on the TV main board that control the amount of power sent to the individual colors (red, blue, green). These chips were fried. Over time the vents on the TV fill with dust. This prevents air flow, and hot chips will get too hot. So I replaced the chips and also replaced the coolant in the Blue and Green CRT. It made the TV look new.

So I fixed her iPod. I guess it was just frozen with the battery keeping it frozen (iPod was not turning on). Apple suggests waiting 24 hours an seeing if that fixes it. Amy goes to work tomorrow. God forbid if she has to listen to the radio. I was determined to get this mp3 player playing.

I discovered my theory was most likely true when I put headphones in. Listening as I took the tip gingerly in and out of the iPod, I could hear I slight pop indicating that there was power to the device.

From there I needed to disconnect the battery. Using a guitar pick, I made my way inside. I disconnected the battery waited a bit, then put it back. Before putting it back together I tested it. It worked! I am listening to it now typing on my iPhone.

My fingers are blistered feeling from sliding my way inside.
