I have created a torrent server! It’s a virtual machine that is running off of my media server. It is running a copy of Windows XP Pro with Symantec Endpoint Protection. I have 150 GB’s of storage and 8 GB for the operating system. I am using it to torrent television shows as well as HD movies and console games. This helps me cope with not having cable television. I also torrent needed applications. I am trying to become a member of the better private trackers out there. I am not having the best of luck.

Some applications I am using to run this server:

Windows XP Professional SP3

Symantec Enpoint Protection 11.0.5

uTorrent with Web UI

TED – Torrent Episode Downloader

My favorite things about uTorrent:

Its probably the best torrent application there is. It is so full of features, but doesn’t slow this virtual server down. My favorite features are the scheduler and the web interface.

The only think I am missing is a program that will watch my completed folder and sort my files based on file name.

For example: I want E:/Completed/The.Simpsons.S20E03.HDTV.vxid.avi to automatically move to M:/Television/The Simpsons/Season 20/

I have tried a program called MoveOut. I have not had much luck. I can’t really get it to work. Anyone have any suggestions?

Last thing, I have an iPhone web access page that I really like… seems to work great too!

So I have read / heard that Windows 7 has an XP emulator. Tonight I installed it. I had to enable a feature of my CPU in the BIOS to make it work. I have it installed and working. My favorite feature is the fact that I can map USB devices to it. I have a Fujistu Scanner that I could not get working for the life of me in Windows 7. In XP it installs so easily, and it did the same thing in this virtual XP.

One problem I have found so far is that I can not join it to my domain. I think they are blocking me from doing this, but if that was the case, why did they give me XP Professional rather than home? Maybe I need to dedicate a NIC to the VM. I need to play with it more, but these are my first thoughts.

Here is the link I used: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Here are my defining specs:

Core i7, eVGA Motherboard x58, 6 GB Ram, 600 GB HDD Space

Edit: I have now joined my XP virtual PC to my domain. I needed to bridge it on the same network. Before it was using NAT and did not have the capability to communicate with my domain controller.
